Activities For Older Adults

Water Works!

As a person ages, they may not be able to be as physically active as they once were. . It is still important to give the body plenty of exercise. Regular exercise can improve heart health, assist the immune system, keep the brain sharp and help keep your body healthy. There are many exercises and physical fitness activities for older  adults.

Swimming and water aerobics are safe for adults over the age of 75. These low impact aerobics activities can keep the body healthy. The water will allow the body to move easily and reduce tension. Swimming will also increase the heart rate.

According to information from the American College of Sports Medicine, older people should aim to get their heart pumping at up to 85 percent of their maximum heart rate. Moving around in the water may be low impact but these exercises can help strengthen the heart. Low impact water exercises can also help a person with knee and hip troubles. They can get up and get moving much easier in the water. There are many community organizations that offer water exercise classes, and some are designed just for the seniors.

Like with any exercise, be sure to speak to your doctor before beginning any new fitness activities.
